Short Courses

Short courses are run at SASVI that focus on instruction, training and pedagogies of different areas of the expanded core curriculum as well as adaptations to the regular school curriculum.  Sometimes these courses focus on one area, but they can combine more than one area if it is deemed preferable. Where possible we incorporate adults with vision impairment to provide expertise and act as role models for the students. These courses have the twofold purpose of providing training and socialising opportunities for the students and learning opportunities for the adults.

These courses are usually either one or two days long and target a specific cohort of students, their support staff, teachers and parents. At least one short course is run during the first three school terms of any year. Areas covered in previous years include:

  • Braillenote
  • Assistive technologies
  • iPad
  • JAWs (screen reader)
  • Orientation and mobility
  • Social skills
  • Independent living skills
  • Tactile awareness
  • Music
  • Physical Education

Due to the targeted nature of these courses SASVI teachers nominate students they think will benefit most from the content of a particular course. A preference is given to country students and students not attending the SASVI School or secondary support programs.
