Charles Campbell secondary centre
for students with vision impairment

The Vision Impairment Centre at Charles Campbell Secondary School operates on a model in accordance with the school's philosophy to ensure that all students, in particular those with special needs, have equitable access to all educational opportunities.

  • Students have an area for work and storage of materials, where adaptive equipment and specialised resources are available.

THE STUDENTS

The Centre supports students who are blind or who have very low vision.   The students require specialised support and resources to access regular school curriculum.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ENROLMENT

Students must be identified as being one of the following:
  1. Partially sighted and requiring, as a result of reduced vision, intensive support to access, participate and succeed in all the required learning areas and intensive instruction in  several of the extended core curriculum areas.
  2. Partially sighted, having had a sudden vision loss that results in the need to access the extended core curriculum for students with vision impairment.
  3. (a) totally blind and/or

    (b) braille dependent, or having long term support needs.

THE SUPPORT MODEL

Students work within the regular Charles Campbell Secondary School program, with additional support negotiated individually.  Agreement on teacher support and student subject load is made within the negotiated education process.

The students' timetables incorporate the flexibility necessary to allow the time required for completion of work and study of the extended core curriculum.  The support model includes some in-class support of students, generally in practically orientated areas or those where equipment is used.

Withdrawal of students is negotiated on an individual basis, dependent on the student’s vision and curriculum needs.  Withdrawal may be required for:

  • the use of specialised equipment
  • additional time and support for tests
  • additional time for work completion
  • study of the extended core curriculum for students with vision impairment.

CCSS STAFF

The long-term nature of the program at Charles Campbell Secondary School and the access to continuing training and development, mean that many staff, have extensive experience with the special adaptations required for students who have vision impairments.   Classroom teachers, with additional training have become experienced in using specialised teaching strategies and providing appropriate resources.

THE VI SUPPORT STAFF

Teachers from South Australian School for Vision Impaired staff work as support teachers of students with vision impairment at Charles Campbell Secondary School.

The support teacher acts as a resource to the classroom teacher in providing advice and assistance to ensure that materials and teaching practices are modified appropriately to accommodate each student’s vision needs.

Additional consultative support, materials and resources are available from specialist staff of South Australian School for Vision Impaired.
